Eco Friendly Green Latex Mattress – World’s First Ever “Certified Organic Latex” Has Arrived

By Larry Wolfe

Consumers have been the driving force towards green in all areas and the bedding industry and more specifically latex mattress manufacturing has recently been touched. Latex Green is a highly regarded sleep products supplier. They have now received both the USDA and European authorities’ approval for their extensive efforts in recent years which have now resulted in a “Certified Organic Latex” product for them.

Latex Green and their distributor Latexco West/Sleep Comp West have the honor to bring the world’s first Certified Organic Latex bedding components to the United States as the end result of several years working to attain this goal. Latex Green has taken remarkable steps over the past four years to achieve this highlight by undertaking very strenuous guidelines concerning the certifications of plantations they are linked to for their source of latex.

Not a simple feat, the process involved proper site selection, completely free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, examination of the water supply, soil type and condition of soil, even including consistent airflow so the crop was enhanced by maximum use of carbon dioxide. Some of the desireable attributes of the latex mattress that have caused the public to become such fans over the past 15 years are as follows:

  • · Dust mite resistant
  • · Naturally hypoallergenic and anti-microbial
  • · Completely contours to full body giving total support needed especially to the shoulder and hip areas
  • · Can be purchased in an all natural or a blended latex to suit your firmness preference
  • · Resilient and returns to its natural form immediately
  • · Mattress can be made in several layers with different firmness so you can switch them around to suit your best sleeping comfort and additionally each layer can be made “duplex style” where each partner selects the firmness choice on their side of the mattress
  • · Never needs turning or flipping
  • · Longer lasting than conventional mattresses
  • · Sleeps cooler in summer and warmer in winter

The consumer reaction in the U. S. to the Latex Green accomplishment has been that they are quite pleased to see this product available and demand has initially exceeded supply. Latex Green has plans in place to address this so the phase-in will be smooth. Those plans include additional locations for their sources.

Certainly the concentrated additional steps in this totally green latex mattress process will have a cost and that cost will be reflected in mattress prices because it will be passed along from point to point in the chain from field to factory to retailer to customer. Only the future will tell to what degree consumers will choose green but they now have a choice to take it to the highest level with the purest of the pure “natural latex”.

Your Baby Crib Mattress – Facts You Should Know About Harmful Chemicals In Crib Mattresses

Numerous studies have been done to look at the links between infant crib mattresses and infant health problems which include Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, Autism, and Attention Deficit Disorder. As a bed manufacturer for 36 years I’d like to comment on this very serious problem of toxicity and the effects on a small infant placed on a crib mattress who obviously doesn’t have the ability to make any adjustments to this crib environment. So let’s take a look at what could be in the crib environment you’ve introduced your baby to.

What causes the toxicity? Well, it’s related to the fumes from the materials that were used to make the mattress. When these fumes leave the materials it’s called degassing. Your usual crib mattresses are comprised of vinyl, acrylic, polyester or memory foam which are all man-made synthetic materials.

Additionally, federal regulations require that all manufacturers make the mattress flame retardant and the large majority of manufacturers use chemicals that discourage fire. While that obviously can be a good thing in terms of fire danger remember an infants’ respiratory system hasn’t sufficiently developed to be able to handle the  fumes from these materials. Who would want to take a chance on allowing their infant to breath these chemicals and not suspect there might be a build up leading to the infant experiencing health problems from continuous exposure?

Perhaps this is why there has been an upsurge in the sale of all natural products.  Latex crib mattresses are one of the best choices you can make as a natural mattress for your baby.   It gives the right  amount of support  for your baby along with enough contour give and softness to let your baby sleep well. Another healthy benefit is that latex is hypoallergenic. And one of the things we’ve all witnessed is a little baby sweating on a plastic mattress. The properties of latex are such that it breathes and is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer which allows your infant to sleep more comfortably.

Organic wool is naturally fire resistant and will absorb moisture while leaving a dry surface. Combine the latex mattress with a natural fire retardant such as this in a wool backed  cotton cover and you’ve made the best possible choice for your baby.

Remember this when you start to shop for the baby crib mattress.  Health and safety factors should be paramount in your decision on which crib mattress to buy.  Buying an all natural latex crib mattress surrounded by all natural products can give you peace of mind that your baby is sleeping in a non toxic, safe, and comfortable environment.

Factory Direct Latex Mattresses – You Can Enjoy Substantial Savings If You Ask the Right Questions!

If you do a search for “factory direct” on any item you’re shopping for do the results always take you to the actual manufacturer of the product? Not hardly. Those two words are pretty straightforward and used to mean that you were dealing with the factory that made the item and as soon as it came off of their assembly line—you could purchase it directly from them. The importance of this is that purchasing your item direct from the manufacturer cut out the additional steps required to take the product to the retail market AND more importantly it cut out the price markups that go along with that all along the way. All of those additional costs were categorized as “cutting out the Middle Man”.

And so you hear the term FACTORY DIRECT a lot in the mattress industry. I’d like to discuss what really qualifies a company to say they fit that mould. Because as I stated earlier the very nature of buying direct–without adding additional profit layers at each stage of the distribution chain–implies that the consumer will experience SIGNIFICANT SAVINGS by buying direct from the manufacturer.

Mr. or Mrs. Consumer are the ones who pay for the additional profit layers when they purchase from non factory-direct sources! What does this tell you? It should tell you that if you want to enjoy the best price you should take the time to “find the factory” and make your purchase direct.

It is surprising to me, in my 35 years as a true manufacturer of innerspring mattresses and latex mattresses, that so many consumers hear or see the words factory direct used by a mattress retailer and don’t actually verify the claim. My experience in this industry has shown me that the general public has grown so used to hearing the term factory direct used in advertising that they very often fail to recognize an “actual” factory direct manufacturer–and conversely they fail to recognize a retailer who “claims” they are factory direct but doesn’t meet the factory direct criteria.

Asking lots of questions is always good. With that in mind, here are four questions to ask if you’re shopping for a new latex mattress and you want to properly identify the source you’re dealing with:

1. Do you have equipment necessary to make the mattresses?

2. Does your company have employees skilled and dedicated in mattress construction and assembly?

3. Does your company have a dedicated manufacturing facility for this product?

4. Does your company sell direct to the public via your own factory showroom or your own factory internet site?

All four of these questions require yes answers to pass the factory direct test. If any answer is a no… you’re not dealing with a factory direct manufacturer.

The ultimate goal of the consumer is to get the best product at the best price. Today’s consumers have many resources available to help them shop. I share this information to give the consumer one additional resource to help them in their quest.

Phoenix Mattress Firm, Sleep EZ, Reveals the Secrets to a Great Night’s Sleep

PHOENIX, AZ–(Marketwire – July 27, 2010) – “As the alarm rings and you reach for the snooze button, you can’t help but wonder why you’re so tired. You went to bed at 10 p.m. and its 6 a.m. right now. That’s a full eight hours. But then you remember all that tossing and turning. And you’re not the only guilty party — your wife seemed to toss and turn every time you finally found a comfortable spot and began to drift off.” If that scenario sounds familiar, Sleep EZ, a Tempe-based mattress firm, provides its customer a better night’s sleep through finding a better mattress.

Sleep EZ believes it’s likely your mattress is keeping you from getting your beauty sleep. But it’s not just your physical appearance and sunny disposition that sleep deprivation robs you of — studies show insufficient sleep can lead to high blood pressure, depression, diabetes and obesity.

For many, the solution to insomnia may be as simple as buying a new mattress. To evaluate if your mattress is interfering with a good night’s sleep, answer these two questions: Do you or your partner toss and turn on your current mattress? Do you wake up with stiffness and pains from fighting all night to get comfortable? If you’ve answered yes to either question, it’s time to start mattress shopping.

But how do you choose a new mattress? “I put my trust in latex mattresses to support a good night’s sleep,” says Larry Wolfe, who has manufactured and sold quality mattresses since 1974 as owner of Phoenix-based Sleep EZ. “Latex is a great product with many benefits: it completely conforms to the contour of your body while supporting it, it never needs turning, it’s anti-allergenic, it’s dust-mite resistant, it’s noiseless and it has excellent motion isolation, so you can move without disturbing your partner. A latex mattress outlasts a traditional innerspring mattress by twice the life span, which saves you money.”

To help his customers find their perfect mattress, Wolfe consults with them about their needs and preferences. Then, he helps them select the three mattress layers that will create their customized mattress. “You may unzip the mattress cover and interchange the three layers within the confines of your home to get that ‘just-right’ feel for you and your partner,” Wolfe explains. “For queen and king mattresses, each side can be customized with a firmer or softer feel at no extra charge. Our layered design takes the risk out of selecting your new mattress, because we’ll swap out the layers you’ve chosen if you aren’t fully satisfied.”

A detailed buyer’s guide is available on Sleep EZ’s website to further help customers with their decision and answer any questions they may have about latex. And you don’t have to sacrifice the environment for a good night’s sleep: Sleep EZ even offers a latex mattress made from all-natural materials.

“I’m proud of our products and the savings we’re able to offer as a factory-direct manufacturer of latex mattresses,” says Wolfe. “We’d like to see everyone get their minimum daily requirement of seven hours of sleep a night.”

How Long is the Adjustment Period on a New Latex Mattress?

You’ve been tossing and turning for quite some time….I don’t mean hours…..I mean years! You did your research and decided that all the information you gathered on natural latex would be the answer to your prayers for a good night’s sleep.

Your bed arrived, it’s all set up and you’re ready for that first great sleep you so well deserve. You climb in bed and think “This feels waaaay different than usual! Your body recognizes you are sleeping on something new. The morning comes and you may wake up saying to yourself, “Wait a minute I’m not sure how I feel or how well I slept last night. How can this be?” Everything you read about latex was so great. It was supposed to give the very best support to your body. It was to conform to your shape, spring back to it’s original form immediately when you moved or rolled over on your side and so on so you would wake fresh, rested and ready to go!

When you introduce your body to a new latex bed the adjustment period any one person experiences will vary. Some people will have very little adjustment period. Usually the lighter a person is the less time it will take for them to enjoy the new feel. Others may take a while to adjust.

Our spine while sleeping is supposed to be in the same position as it is when we are standing erect. When our body has been sleeping on a bed for a long period of time that doesn’t give us the support we need the muscles in our back will try to compensate and can become strained. The muscles are working at night when they should have the night off. They become trained over a period of time for what they have to do and they need time on a new bed to realize the change.

If you sleep on a new mattress a couple of nights and feel the need to change it out– you just haven’t begun to give it a chance! Remember how long you put up with your old uncomfortable bed before giving it the boot? We work diligently with our customers to get the right support and the right comfort for them. Our experience has shown that most often the “early caller” who thought the mattress wouldn’t work for them finds out they were wrong and they let us know they made the “I can’t sleep on this” call prematurely. It’s recommended that you give your new mattress a minimum of 30 days. Given sufficient time for your body to adjust to the comfort of an all latex mattress you’ll soon be one of the growing number of people who say, “I would never part with my latex bed”!!

That being said, if you give it sufficient time and it still doesn’t work for you all mattress retailers have a return policy which you can use to exchange your mattress. If you give up too soon you just may miss out on what many believe is the best supporting most comfortable mattress available for that good night’s sleep!

Blended Latex Or Natural Latex? Facts You Should Know Before You Buy a Latex Mattress!

If you have visited internet sites recently in your search for a latex mattress and read the “all natural stories” on organic latex mattresses you might want to make sure you know the facts about ” natural latex” vs “blended latex” before you buy. Many new sellers of the all natural latex or organic latex mattress have arrived on the scene in recent years and the information they provide may fall short of truly and fully informing the consumer.

The best latex process used over the past 30 years to create latex mattresses has been “blended latex using the Talalay method”. This process results in the best possible latex in terms of product durability, consistent cell structure which translates to equal firmness throughout the mattress, contour comfort in adapting to your body, and air circulation in the mattress.

Consider the statement that blended Talalay in latex mattresses has a great percentage of synthetic latex which is made with petroleum by-product and is harmful to your health. Let me put that in perspective since it sounds a little scary. Here are a few every day items of over 5000 products that contain petroleum by-product: Clothes, eyeglasses, detergents, telephones, cameras, bandages, drinking cups, crayons, dentures, refrigerators, golf balls, toothpaste, dishes, ice chests, sun glasses, balloons, combs, vaporizers, paint brushes, soft contact lenses, CD’s and DVD’s.

Blended latex is not harmful in any way. The Talalay process delivers the benefits of an added consistency and strength to any natural latex it is blended with. Blended latex gives the most superior comfort and has a more lively feel due to the air infusion than any type of latex mixture produced with another process called Dunlop. Dunlop, also known as the standard latex process, produces a more dense and less contoured feel when you lie down on the mattress.

The Talalay process is more expensive and there are only 3 manufacturers in the world that do this manufacturing process which includes two additional steps not found in the Dunlop method. The synthetic is blended to make the natural more “elastic” to stretch and recovery. After the natural latex and synthetic latex mixtures are blended a vacuum expansion and freezing are performed. These two additional steps give the latex better air flow, longer lasting strength, uniform cell structure and a softer more contoured feel while still giving full mattress support.. These are key benefits you will want in your mattress and need to consider in choosing the right latex mattress.

The final best choice will be what feels most comfortable to you. Buying the all natural or organic could mean you give up the benefits you were really looking for. So don’t be afraid of the synthetic blend……in my opinion it’s the best value for your money.

Consumers Giving Up Latex Mattress Comfort in Rush to Natural

images.jpgIn building Latex Mattresses the best latex over the past 30 years has been “Blended latex manufactured by the Talalay process. This latex is the best for creating latex mattresses in terms of durability, consistency of cell structure, contouring comfort, and air circulation.

BE CAREFUL WHO YOU LISTEN TO BECAUSE THEY MAY NOT KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT!

Over the last couple of years many sellers of latex mattresses have popped up on the internet and written distorted information in an effort to sell their products. Unfortunately, when one person sees something in print it is easier to copy that information, taken as gospel, and use it in their own copy to sell the same product. The little snowball becomes quite large until the same bogus information becomes reality when it is seen in print so often.

This is the case with blended Talalay in latex mattresses. Websites selling the “natural story” are constantly berating blended latex because it has a great percentage of synthetic latex mixed with natural latex. They say the synthetic latex is made of petroleum and is harmful to your health and the only latex to consider is “all natural”. Synthetic latex is made with by products of petroleum, as are thousands of products in our society. It is not harmful in any way and adds consistency and strength to any natural latex it is blended with. They are overlooking the superior comfort of blended latex when produced by the “Talalay Process” which has a more lively feel than any type of latex mixture produced by the standard dunlop process.

All natural products by their very nature are not always consistent and uniform. Are all coffee beans the same? Are all rubber trees the same? The synthetic is blended to make the natural, which is more elastic ( more stretch & recovery ), a better product. After the natural and synthetic latex mixtures are blended there are two methods of turning this liquid into a comfortable latex mattress core.

Dunlop or standard process, which produces a denser and less contouring feel in the mattress.
Talalay process which includes two steps in the manufacturing process not in the Dunlop process; vacuum expansion and freezing. These two steps give latex better air flow, and longer lasting strength. It also produces a softer more contouring feel without losing any support. The talalay process is more expensive and there are only THREE manufacturers in the world.

Unfortunately, in the search for being all natural many consumers have bought into the dunlop natural denser latex and given up the better feeling and longer lasting Talalay blended latex. In addition sellers are playing on the consumers rush toward natural and the public is paying much more for,in my opinion,a lesser product.
