Coming Soon to a Bed Near You – Bed Bugs Are on the Rise!

Bed bugs can show up anywhere-and they are. There is some debate about the “why” but generally this surge of bed bugs for the first time in 50 years is attributed to international travel, immigration and that the EPA banned products that used to work on bed bugs.. They’re now found in hotels, retail stores, movie theaters, wherever people go– no place is off limits. They hitch a ride whenever they get the chance and you can unknowingly bring them into your home. Since their source of food is either you or your pets’ blood they soon make their way to those areas where they can come out at night and have their feast-in your bed or Fido’s bed.

Not to be confused with dust mites which cannot be seen with the naked eye, bed bugs will usually be found in your mattress and foundation or within 15 feet of your bed according to studies. Some companies may say that bed bugs cannot live in a latex mattress and that is absolutely FALSE. Bedbugs live anywhere they can find a live host. While you can visually see them as little black specks, and can see evidence of them from their excretions, you cannot see their eggs or young….they are microscopic.

It ‘s a wise idea as a preventive measure to encase your latex mattress with a zippered cover that is tightly woven to prevent the mattress from harboring bed bugs. This protective bedding works by encasing your entire mattress and preventing any infestation from occurring. If bed bugs are already present the bugs will be eradicated over time because the mattress is sealed. It will take at least one year in a sealed encasement for all the bed bugs to die! This fact alone might be an incentive to take preventive measures ahead of time. Likewise, your foundation and pillows should be encased as well. While a bed bug bite isn’t life threatening many people are affected by the bites or rash and need to apply a topical cream to counteract the skin reaction. Living with these critters is more than annoying.

Bed bugs are flat, as thin as the width of a sheet of paper or credit card. They move from bed to bed quite fast in your home and can be a major problem. They are black and visible to the naked eye, the size of a flattened apple seed. Their color changes when they have engorged on blood. They avoid light and come out at night most often but if they are hungry they’ll venture out and get their meal from a person sitting in a computer chair in broad daylight.

The look of their bite can vary. It generally looks like a white or red welt. If they bite the vein you may have one bite. Other times there may be a series of bites where they searched for food or as they were biting they may have been interrupted by your movements which caused them to start over. Bedbugs are attracted to warmth and carbon dioxide. You can have two people in the same bed bitten by the bug and one has a reaction and the other doesn’t.

How they arrive? Any place that harbors bed bugs can be a place where they hide and become the secret traveler. You visit a hotel and toss your suitcase on the floor or on the bed. You buy some second hand furniture or pick up items at a garage sale. Your college kids drag their bags home from the dorm. They’re showing up in movie theaters, health clubs, hospitals, and nursing homes.

Where they hide? Since they avoid light if they haven’t burrowed into your mattress or found a spot under your bed frame they will hide behind your baseboard at the head of your bed, in nightstand drawers, electrical sockets, light fixtures, soft cushioned chairs and sofas or on your walls behind pictures. Although they’re usually concentrated in a small area in the home that can change.

How to combat? Number one is always prevention by encasing your mattress, foundation and pillows. Additionally, inspect and vacuum thoroughly all areas around your bed. Wash all of your bed linen in very hot water. Dry your linen twice. If you discover them in your bed don’t go to another bed as this can spread them fast. There are chemical sprays of course and pest control companies with a variety of remedies from sprays to powders to heat treatment machines.

Remember this…..prevention is always the best medicine!

HOW TO SETUP YOUR NEW SLEEP E-Z LATEX MATTRESS

When UPS delivers your new mattress it will consist of either three or four boxes depending on the size of the mattress you ordered from Sleep E-Z. Unpacking and assembly of your new latex mattress will take approximately thirty minutes and it is suggested you read these instructions completely BEFORE you begin.

1. Transport the boxes you received to the bedroom where the mattress will be used. The fully assembled mattress will weigh about 140 pounds. Even though each component is not heavy by itself you’ll want to avoid moving the finished mattress.

2. All the boxes will be labeled with “ONE” of the following descriptions to let you know what’s inside: Cover/Soft, Cover/Medium, Cover/Firm, Cover/Extra Firm, (to show which box the cover is in) or Soft, Medium, Firm, Extra Firm (to show one of the layers). Additionally, the same description will be marked on the plastic inside each box so you will know the contents before removing the plastic.

3. Find the cylinder marked “Cover/(etc)” and carefully open it with a small cut to get it started and then safely tear it open. Each cylinder is “double-wrapped” so you will find a second black plastic wrapper inside. Open this inner wrapper the same way.

4. Remove the Cover and open and lay it on the foundation that your mattress will set on. Unzip it so you can fold back the top panel and fold down all four sides of the bottom of the cover over your foundation just like you were putting a fitted sheet on your bed. This way you have everything out of the way and can simply open and place each subsequent layer on your foundation.

5. Your latex layer will INSTANTLY EXPAND to its final size when the plastic is totally removed. You may find it easier to place the plastic cylinder ON your foundation before you open it so the expanded latex will already be somewhat in its final resting place and just need a little adjustment to set it in place.

6. Open each remaining cylinder in the order you choose based on the firmness you want at each level working from the Bottom Up. So the final layer on top will be the one you want closest to your body while sleeping.

7. As each layer is placed on the foundation you may need to slightly tweak its position so all layers are correctly aligned on top of each other to make sure they fit nicely in the cover.

8. Once all layers are in place pull the mattress cover up on all sides and pull the top layer of the mattress cover over the mattress and close the zipper so your layers are completely enclosed.

Pretty simple and now you’re done!

Our bedtime advice before you begin sleeping on your new mattress is this: Your body will generally need some time to adjust to this new feel. Please see our information on this blog about “your adjustment period” for your new mattress.

IMPORTANT: Keep the mailing boxes in tact in case you need to return a component for a different firmness during your 90 day trial.

A Look Inside a Latex Mattress

FIVE BASIC TYPES OF LATEX USED IN MATTRESSES
Dunlop Mfg Process- using only natural liquid latex
Dunlop Mfg Process- using a blend of natural liquid latex and synthetic liquid latex
Dunlop Mfg Process- using only synthetic liquid latex

Talalay Mfg Process- using only natural liquid latex
Talalay Mfg Process- using a blend of natural liquid latex and synthetic liquid latex

MINOR BLEMISHES, INCONSISTENCIES, AND VOIDS IN NATURAL LATEX

When looking at raw latex it is common to see minor blemishes, slight discoloration, and small air bubbles which are commonly referred to as “voids” in manufacturing language. These are part of the product and in no way deter from the comfort performance and longevity of the latex contained in the mattress. In most cases the latex in your latex mattress is natural and will be whipped with air, much like whipping cake batter.
DISCOLORATION: In order to turn this “latex batter” into a latex mattress core, external heat needs to be applied. (This differs from the manufacture of common polyurethane foam which gets its needed heat from internal chemicals which cause a chain reaction to expand polyurethane foam.) In the manufacturer of latex mattress cores external heat is transmitted thru the aluminum sealed container and thru the aluminum rods positioned on the top and bottom of the mold. In some cases the heat can vary causing slight color changes.
VOIDS: Latex liquid is whipped with air and then poured into molds, as heat is applied any small air pockets will be expanded and become more visible when you slice the core into individual layers. These voids are usually undetected if the core is left intact without slicing. Voids are more prevelent in a 100% all natural latex mattress core produced by the “dunlop process,” and it is common to see small latex plugs to fill the voids. The voids are filled with the same latex that makes up the core and is done by hand as the latex core moves thru the manufacturing line.
BLEMISHES / GLUE SEAMS: Blemishes are a variation of voids and arise when removing finished latex cores form their molds. In some cases there can be slight tears or spots of rough surface contrasting with the smooth consistent surface on top and bottom. These minor imperfections are repaired with non toxic water-based glue. Latex cores are generally produced in cores measuring 40″ x 80″ and will need to be cut and glued to arrive at the different size mattresses: queen 60 x 80, king 76 x 80, and Cal. king 72 x 84. These glue seams are part of the finished product and do not interfere with sleeping comfort.

SLEEP EZ LATEX MATTRESSES ARE DESIGNED FOR ADJUSTMENT AND ARE OPEN FOR INSPECTION

Our latex mattresses are designed in approx 3″ layers of latex of different firmness contained in a removable zipper cover. Conventional mattresses, as well as latex mattresses made by Sealy, Serta, Simmons, and Spring Air are contained in closed, non-removable covers which prevent you from looking at the actual components inside the mattress. In addition, you can’t make adjustments without exchanging your mattress.

PICTURES OF NATURAL AND BLENDED RAW LATEX USING BOTH DUNLOP AND TALALAY PROCESS SHOWS THAT LATEX IS NOT ALWAYS PICTURE PERFECT

Talalay process blended latex is the most perfect product in terms of visual perfection, consistency of firmnesses, range of firmnesses (from ultra soft to super firm), and durability. For the past 40 years it has been deemed the best and we as mattress manufacturers have paid a premium to put it into a mattress.
But times have changed and with more demand for an all natural product the Talalay process was applied to 100% natural latex without synthetic blended into the mixture. There are three problems with 100% natural latex manufactured using the talalay process: (1) extra firm not available above 39-40 ild due to the conflict between the natural substance and the freezing step in the talalay process. (2) 100% natural talalay under 22 ild will lack the durability of talalay blended. (3) 100% natural talalay does not have the cell strength as blended.

TALALAY 100% NATURAL WHEN SLICED INTO LAYERS

Talalay 100% natural sliced in halfThe picture on left is of latex mattress core from the inside when sliced into two layers. This component is perfect in every way as far as its intended use inside a mattress, for support and comfort.
What it lacks is visual perfection. We can see the minor voids, and a slight brownish discoloration on one area.

This photo is raw natural latex manufacturered using the dunlop process. The dunlop process is used universally throughout the world for producing “100% all natural” liquid latex. Example is what to expect in the way it looks. Notice areas that are not smooth. This is a perfectly good latex core used in mattresses made by Sealy, Simmons, Serta, as well as any mattress manufacturer producing enclosed latex mattresses.

Some companies may ask latex core manufacturers to grade finished cores, and purchase only the cores that meet a certain standard from a cosmetic standpoint. Naturally they will have to pay a higher price for the product and pass it along to the consumer.

Photo to left is another raw all natural latex core manufactured using the dunlop process. This core was produced in queen size mold, thereby eliminating any fabrication or glue seam. Some latex core manufacturers have cores in the various finished mattress sizes, but the most common size is twin XL. Glue seams are to be considered a part of the manufacturing process and in no way make the latex core better because it does not have a glue seam.

Two twin XL latex cores side by side showing slight discolorations and minor voids. In some cases a latex core will come thrugh production with larger than accepatable voids, or large bubble holes. At this point in the production the core will be pulled aside and manually repaired by adding the same firmness of liquid latex to fill the void.

In conclusion the following facts apply to latex mattress cores:

  • Natural latex cores still retain the same high qualities even though they may not be as cosmetically attractive to the eye.
  • The talalay process produces latex cores with the fewest voids and blemishes in the blended and all natural, but the blended is superior in comfort and durability.
  • 100% natural latex produced using the talalay process is not as good a value to the consumer as talalay blended.
  • Dunlop process has been improved through technical advances over the past few years to the point of marginal difference.

We wanted to take this opportunity to issue a warning to those in the market for latex sleep products. Many retailers are distributing misleading information about “Natural or Organic Products” in order to promote what they are selling.  With the world’s current environmental movement, people everywhere are doing their part to reduce their carbon footprint, diligently recycle and to choose natural over synthetic. However, we suggest that before you go out and make a purchase get all of the information you need to make a well-informed buying decision.

All Natural Fact vs. Fiction
Latex Mattresses

Over the last couple of years, many sellers of latex mattresses have popped up on the internet and written distorted information in an effort to sell their products.  In some instances, they have just gathered the information from other sites and reworded it with their own spin. Unfortunately, sometimes when one person sees something in print so many times, it becomes gospel.the little snowball becomes quite large until the bogus information becomes reality when it is seen in print so often.

Read our latex mattress buyers guide This is the case with Blended Talalay in latex mattresses.

Web sites selling the “natural story” are berating blended latex because it has a percentage of synthetic latex mixed with natural latex. They say the synthetic latex is made of petroleum and is harmful to your health and the only latex to consider is “all natural”. Nothing could be further from the truth. Synthetic latex is made with by-products of petroleum, as are thousands of other non-harmful products in our society.  It is not harmful in any way. Synthetic latex adds consistency and strength to any natural latex it is blended with. They are overlooking the superior comfort, performance, and longevity of blended latex when produced by the Talalay Process which has a more lively feel than any type of latex mixture produced by the standard Dunlop Process.
